У него привычка нервно кусать ногти. He is in the habit of answering letters at once. - Он привык отвечать на письма сразу. She is trying to get out of the habit of sitting up late. Она старается отделаться от привычки поздно ложиться спать. В такой же предложно-герундиальной конструкции обычно употребляются существительные hope, idea, thought: I hate the idea of moving. Мне ненавистна сама мысль о переезде. (2.) Русские существительные привычки, обычаи соответствуют английским habit 2. и custom. Существительное habit 2. употребляется для описания черт поведения отдельного человека и в значении "обычай, образ жизни" обычно употребляется в форме множественного числа: to have the right habits of living - вести правильный образ жизни; to take up Western habits of life (of thought) - воспринять западный образ жизни (мышления). Существительное custom обозначает традиции народа, обычаи страны, связанные с историей, религией, особыми обстоятельствами и т. п.: Old English customs. Старинные английские традиции. It is the custom to take flowers or chocolates when visiting a patient in hospital. Принято приносить цветы или конфеты при посещении больного в больнице
